Luckily the surgeon had a translator. I had a local anaesthetic so I can remember some of the operation, and I was awake for the liposuction on my jowls, and everything seemed fine. Afterwards, I was bandaged up and taken to my apartment, and even did some sightseeing. I stayed for 10 days and went back to the hospital three times for checkups.
On my last day I had my stitches out, but when I got home I noticed some stitches had been missed. I went to see my dentist, who took them out free of charge. My face was bruised and swollen for six weeks, but when it went down my neck skin and jowls were still loose. Too much had been taken off one eyebag, and not enough off the other.
When I rang the travel company to complain, they tried to pass the buck, saying they were just the third party. I emailed the hospital, which offered to do it again for free if I paid for the flights. I think the surgeon used an outdated technique.
The women who went abroad for cheap cosmetic surgery and ended up scarred for life
Mum-of-three Sue Briddick, 52, who lives in Brighton, went to Turkey in to undergo a tummy tuck and breast uplift. I wanted a tummy tuck because I had a lot of loose skin after having my children. So I researched it online and came across a company in Turkey which looked quite nice. The sales representative suggested I get my breasts done too and I thought why not? Most people stay in a hotel but I paid extra to stay in an apartment with a carer. After a four-hour journey, when I got there I changed my mind.
I just wanted to go home. But they coaxed me into staying. A few days later, I went back to the hospital to have my dressings changed and when the bandages came off I noticed the skin on my tummy had turned black.
They told me it was bruising and it would go away. I was horrified. Every part of me the surgeon had touched had an infection called necrosis, where not enough blood gets to your body tissue so it dies. They had to scrape off the dead flesh and take a skin graft from my thigh. I was in hospital for a month and I felt bad using the NHS but at the same time I was practically dying. My tummy has been left badly scarred.
I had a consultation at their London office and the surgeon seemed very confident so I booked the Eurostar. The clinic in Brussels was nice, clean and modern. Then my worst nightmare happened. Independent Premium Comments can be posted by members of our membership scheme, Independent Premium.
